The GR23 titanium solid bar (American standard UNS R56401), a kind of Ti-6Al-4V ELI (extra low interstitial) titanium alloy, which was regarded as the most popular α+β dual-phase titanium alloy and the high-end material specially developed for the application requiring extremely high biocompatibility and high precision is were in particular focus. Its 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium alloy makes it more than 2.5 times stronger than pure titanium at over 900 MPa in tensile strength. Its content of interstitial elements (oxygen ≤0.13%, hydrogen ≤0.0125%, nitrogen ≤0.01%) is drastically lower than for the regular Grade 5 titanium bars, with oxygen being only 65% of Grade 5, which greatly improves the biocompatibility and resistance to fatigue. It holds the dual certification of ASTM F136 (medical implant grade) and ASTM B348 (industrial grade), suitable for medical implantation as well as high-end industrial precision manufacturing.

With respect to size and performance, the GR23 titanium rod has the following strict tolerances: the diameter is 6mm to 150mm; medical implant-grade (6mm-50mm) with a tolerance of ±0.03mm; industrial general-grade (50mm-150mm) with a tolerance of ±0.05mm. The length can be customized to 1m-6m as per customer's requirements, support the cutting in fixed length and multi-segments sawing.
Mechanically, it has a tensile strength of 930MPa-1050MPa, a yield strength≥860MPa, a fracture elongation≥12% and a fatigue strength (107 cycles) of >350MPa. Its mechanical properties change by ≤5% over the service temperature range of -200°C to 350°C, which is incredibly high for temperature sensitivity compared to the pure titanium.
The chemical content is fully compliant with ELI grade standard: Aluminum (5.5%-6.5%), Vanadium (3.5%-4.5%), total impurity elements ≤0.3%. The results of the batch analysis are controlled with the results of the spectroscopic ICP-OES analysis enabling composition deviation ≤0.01% assuring the consistency of performance form batch to batch.
In practical applications, the GR23 titanium rod, with its unique advantages of "ultra-low gap + high strength + high biocompatibility," has become the preferred material for medical implants and high-end aerospace applications.
In the medical field, artificial hip joint stems, knee prostheses, and spinal fixation devices made from GR23 titanium rods reduce the risk of tissue rejection due to their ultra-low gap elements. With a fatigue life exceeding 15 years and compliance with the ISO 10993-4 biocompatibility standard, these products serve as an upgraded alternative to pure titanium implants.
In aerospace applications, GR23 titanium rods with diameters ranging from 8mm to 20mm are precision-machined into satellite attitude sensor brackets and core components of drone navigation systems. The manufacturing process of GR23 titanium rod relies on multiple precision processes to ensure quality: using triple vacuum consumable arc melting (VAR) technology to completely eliminate gas impurities and inclusions in the metal liquid, ensuring uniformity of composition; The hot forging process combines β zone forging (950 ℃ -980 ℃) with isothermal forging to refine the grain size to ASTM 8-10 levels and improve the material's fatigue resistance; After vacuum annealing at 800 ℃ for 2 hours to eliminate internal stress, the finished product is then subjected to electrolytic polishing to achieve a surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.2 μ m, meeting the hygiene requirements of medical implants.
