As high-end industrial core profiles, the production process of titanium wire and titanium rod directly determines the purity, mechanical properties, and dimensional accuracy of the product. They are key basic materials in fields such as aerospace, medical implants, marine engineering, and chemical anti-corrosion. Relying on mature vacuum melting and precision machining technology, titanium wire and titanium rod achieve full process quality control from high-purity sponge titanium to finished products, in line with the ASTM American standard system and international high-end market demand. The following is a complete analysis of standardized production processes.
1.Raw materials and vacuum melting: High purity foundation builds solid quality
Composition analysis --- Titanium content ≥ 99.99% Production starts from high purity Grade 1/2/5 etc sponge titanium, controlling oxygen ≤ 0.13%, nitrogen ≤ 0.05%, hydrogen ≤ 0.0015%, iron ≤ 0.15% strictly to avoid impurity defects from the source. Core melting is vacuum arc remelting (VAR), the titanium sponge electrode is melted into titanium ingots layer by layer in high vacuum environment at a temperature of 1700~1800℃, which can realize the composition uniformity and avoid porosity segregation; high end medical/aviationgrade products are melted with electron beam cold hearth melting (EBCHM) to remove high-density impurities to the maximum degree and gain medical grade purity standard.
2.Hot working: forging, rolling, shaping, grain refining
After the titanium ingot is preheated at 900-950 ℃, it is in the state of hot work.
After preheating at 900-950 ℃, the titanium ingot enters the hot processing stage. The titanium rod adopts a combination of "forging+hot rolling": first, it is freely forged to break down coarse grains; After multiple passes of hot rolling using a reversible rolling mill, a diameter of 20-350mm rod is produced with a tolerance of ± 0.5mm and a straightness of ≤ 0.1mm/m. The titanium wire is made of a hot-rolled rod with a diameter of 8mm, and after acid washing to remove the oxide skin, it is set aside. The entire process is temperature controlled to avoid coarsening of the β phase and ensure subsequent processing toughness.
3.Precision molding: titanium rod finishing+titanium wire multi pass drawing
Surface finishing of titanium rods after heating: turning (Ra ≤ 3.2 μ m) or centerless grinding (Ra ≤ 0.8 μ m) to ensure a smooth and crack free surface; The precision bar tolerance can reach ± 0.02mm, meeting the requirements of medical implants and aviation fasteners. Titanium wire adopts multi pass cold drawing: the reduction rate of rough drawing in a single pass is 10% -15%, and the oxalate coating is lubricated and scratch resistant; Fine drawn to a diameter of 0.1-8.0mm with a tolerance of ± 0.02mm, suitable for scenarios such as filter screens, welding wires, springs, etc.
4. Heat treatment: temperature controlled annealing, strength-toughness balance
The material is work hardened after cold working and needs to be annealed for hydrogen protection at 650-750 ℃ to remove the internal stress, to regain ductility, and prevent it from fracturing in subsequent processing. Medical Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) needs to be tightly temperature controlled in order to generate equiaxed α+β tissue whilst keeping the strength levels (≥ 900MPa) and biocompatibility as high as possible.
5.Quality Inspection and Packaging: Full trace-ability, delivery to conformed.
Fig processing is tested according to ASTM B348(bar)/B863(wire), which follows the dimensional accuracy, surface inspection, mechanical property(tensile/yield/elongation) analysis of impurity, material certificate and testing report for each batch. The packaging is moisture-proof and rust-proof film + wooden box, and the tension of winding tensile wire is ≤ 5N to avoid distortion, so as to keep quality stability for oversea transportation.
